To teach them how to control their own lives and to be self-sufficient.

How many full time staff and part time staff do you have?
Fulltime-13 parttime-9 interpreters-10-15

What are their roles?
Programs such as Group homes, Americorp, job placement, Case Management, immigration services, and donation center

Does each person have a workspace?
Partt-timers share spaces and fulltime have their own space. There are some shared offices such as the case management office.

Are there employees who do not require workspace?
Yes-preschool teacher and assistant

Do you have volunteers?
Yes-10-20 for English Learning Services
Case management has 1-2
Immigration has 1

Does your staff work in groups or independently?
There is a lot of independent work but they share info and partner up to help clients.

What makes your group work and meeting spaces effective or ineffective?
Weird room shapes that are hard to furnish, is ineffective. Effective use of space is having an area that enclosed to give privacy, and intake rooms have large windows and bright colors.

Are there offices or spaces that need to be near each other or shared?
They should be grouped by department and amount of privacy needed. Case management always shares office space, and immigration services are always private spaces. As well as providing private space for health management.

Are there staff members who need their own offices?
Immigration, health access, upper management

What is the number of the existing rooms in your facility and their functions?
22rooms-their uses are offices, conference, intake room, reception area, storage, prep room, kitchen, bath

What do you think are the best aspects of your facility and what do you think it lacks?
Best is the location close to the bus stop. Lack would be no cross walk from bus stop and not enough space.

If you were designing a new building what would you include in the new space that you don’t currently have?
Room for ESL classes, white boards in class and training rooms, tables for training, larger file room, private kitchen, and private bath, 1 large and 2 small conference rooms

Is community involvement one of your priorities?
Yes, co sponsorship and volunteers

What kind of environments have you found that foster interaction between people?
Having case managers facing each other, without partitions helps them communicate. Most of the conversation between refugees happens over coffee.

What are the absolute necessities for the facility?
Computers, Internet, government contracts, company intranet

What type of programs do you offer here?
Community partnership to send people to programs and to school, Some programs they send people to are emergency prep classes, job development, DSS intake

What is the buildings number one use?
Office Space, all of the classes are currently off site, it is easier to have the teachers go to the clients, and the classes grow so much that even if they had classrooms on site they would easily grow out of them,

If the building was adequate what new types of programs would you like to house here, a few class rooms would be nice, but for programs a family literacy program and a computer center for the refugees to learn software and to help teach them English and to keep in touch with their families.

Which of those needs do you think is of highest priority?
Computer lab would be number one because you could teach a literacy class on the computers.

What sort of furnishings and equipment is needed for all of the activities that go in the building?
Files, copy, cameras, phones, computers, color printers, fax, tv, radios, book cases, sofas, shelves, white boards,

What type of environment do you try to provide?
Comfortable

How do you feel you have achieved that in this space?
By hiring a wonderful staff.

What improvements would you make?
Glass doors, sufficient lighting, more natural light, no buzzing lights, more pictures, neutral tones in office, in take areas, bright accents in intake rooms,

In what was have you developed an environment to welcome visitors from different culture?
Authentic paint, show off to client’s donors and volunteers,
They have collages of clients, some people are turned off by the U.S. but some are turned off by their own countries. So a balance would be good.

A few notes:
Closes spaces are scary-floor length bathroom stalls are a bad idea, and closed doors
If you do need to have closed doors they should have glass panels
Windows are important and outside social areas
Intake rooms with bright colors
Breastfeeding areas in the women’s bathroom
Lots of counter space needed for putting together packets, desks aren’t big enough

Interview with Susan Chilcott

What kind of group services do you do?
- No Group work, translation services only
What kind of facilities ideally would you need or like to have?
- conference room
How many people participate in group projects at certain times?
- Most projects are home visits, very few groups meet in the office spaces.
- The Conference room is sometimes used for parties or gatherings.
What problems/issues is your service experiencing currently?
- Interpreter - Including: Susan Chilcott, Janet Johnson, Mae Yang, Jaimie Foster

Along with the paid employees, americorps also works with volunteers and interns. They offer full time and part time positions for 900 to 1700 hours of work.
From the house downtown, Khouan and her team manage all the location and placement of volunteers.

The main needs they spoke about were with storage. They host trainings once a month for about 60 volunteers, so each month they have to put all the materials for that in a separate storage unit. They really want somewhere they can store these materials. They would also like to be able to store all the past and present volunteer files in one place. Right now they have boxes pilled up everywhere, storing whatever they can wherever they can. Khouan also would like for everyone they need to work with to be in one place. Meaning having their financial officer, Khouan, her two assistances, and the director all in one house, so they can all work closer together.

All the employees spoke about how much they loved working in a house, in a family type environment. For them, they would want their new headquarters to continue to be in a house and keep that feeling. Right now each person who works there has their own space, but it’s very cramped. One person’s office is even what used to be a closet – barely big enough to fit a small desk and chair in.
They also hope that having a house as an office space would be more welcoming. Khouan said she thought that a “typical” office building seemed more cold and distancing to those who were coming to the company. Khouan did offer the suggestion of the campus ministries building. In this building they use folding walls in a large room for meeting space. Khouan thought this would be good for the training space they need. That way they could use the room for classrooms or the large trainings they give each month.

The key things they were interested in having were:
Large group space
Offices for everyone
Computer lab
Actual main entrance area [it’s currently an office/reception area]
Childcare area
Kitchen space as the break room
File room
Storage area for training supplies
Overnight stay area for trainees
Space for interpretive services
Many bathrooms [the only have one unisex bathroom]

group answers to interview questions

Questions:

What is the organization’s mission?
Afr. col.- get refugees and immigrants in and help with housing, service, education
High point relief center- service, humanitarianism, not getting involved in politics, and provide assistance

How many full time staff and part time staff do you have?
Raleigh-15
Afr. And there are 2 private offices and one shared office.

What do you think are the best aspects of your facility and what do you think it lacks?

The best aspects are the services they provide. They are lacking space. He would like more clearly defined spaces and a solution to the noise level.

If you were designing a new building what would you include in the new space that you don’t currently have?

A kitchen, more office spaces, a larger conference room, and storage.

Would you like to have spaces for over night stays?

No, we try to encourage self sufficiency and work with a realty companies to provide apartments.

Is community involvement one of your priorities?

yes they rely heavily on churches and civic organizations.

What kind of environments have you found that foster interaction between people?

Any environment the refugees just like to have people to talk to, especially someone who speaks their native language. Their lives are not in dangers on a daily basis and they don't have to fear the police. While our society is not perfect and we do have criminals they don't have to worry about nightly raids that include rapes and kidnapping.

How do you feel you have achieved that in this space?

I didn't ask this question but it seems they provide this feeling with their personalities, their budget doesn't seem to allow them much freedom for decorating.

What improvements would you make?
Mark said he would focus on decorating.

In what ways have you developed an environment to welcome visitors from different cultures?

There doesn't seem to be a need for a connection to their country. How many?
No, everyone that does work at CNNC should have some space somewhere in the building to keep their things or to meet with people.

How often are you at the facility and how often are you on site?
She only goes to the facility for meeting with the other staff members. She usually works with the immigrants and refugees in the community. She would like to have a place back at the center to do this, but right now there is not enough space.

Operations:
Does your staff work in groups or independently?
It depends on the project at hand. Sometimes she works alone and other times she works in a group. Everything is determined on a case by case basis.

What makes your group work spaces/ meeting spaces effective/ not effective?
There is only one conference room and it is incredibly small. There has to be more community meeting places. People shouldn’t have to fight for the space. Also there are not enough offices to accommodate everyone. Many have to share a single office and that can make working very difficult. When several people are working many times there is too much noise to concentrate. The space also doesn’t have adequate space for the printing and filing. They also don’t have a break room, which is important because many people bring their lunch to work.

Are there offices or spaces that need to be next to one another or in a shared space?
The offices should be grouped together. The conference rooms, classrooms, and other multi-functional spaces should be grouped.

Are there staff members who need their own offices?
Everyone needs their own office and space if they are apart of the staff. The only people that shouldn’t have their own space would be the volunteers, and staff that don’t work out of CNNC. In this case there should be an office for them to share so they could keep information at CNNC and have a place to leave their personal things if they do work there for the day.

Facility
existing facility:
What do you think are the best things about your facility and what do you think it lacks?
The building lack many things. There are not enough offices to accommodate everyone. Also they don’t have adequate space for meetings and other events. They don’t have a place where people can eat lunch, and they only have a mini-fridge for people to keep their food, which is not enough space.

What would you like to include in the new space that you don’t currently have?
A large kitchen that would be used by the staff and the immigrants that comes to the center. There needs to be several more meeting spaces that accommodates different numbers of people. Some for groups of 10, 20, or 30 people. Also parking needs to be improved. Classrooms would also be helpful for seminars. Also a mailbox for the people that don’t work out of CNNC.

Knowing community involvement is one of your priorities, what kind of environments foster interaction between people?

Needs:
clubs/ meeting space (ex. arts and crafts)
classrooms
conference space

Which of these needs do you think deserve the highest priority?
All are important and they could all be the same space. Multi-purpose spaces work well.

What sort of furnishings and equipment do you use to facilitate these activities?
A room with a projector and a screen. A TV/VCR unit to play videos. A chalk board or a dry erase board.

Environment
What do you think we can do to make the space more welcoming to visitors or connect to people from so many different cultures?
Showing art work from the different cultures that will be coming to the CNNC.

Glen Haven Developmental Center.

Syd and I went to the Glen Haven Developmental Center and talked with the director Stephanie Baldwin. We visited during the time that the children were using the space and being tutored with their homework.

What kind of group services do you provide?
After school tutoring to about 40 children from K-12th grade, called “Homework Haven” from 3-5pm everyday. This program is a homework-tutoring program where students from Guilford College volunteer to tutor. ESL classes are also offered in the evening for adults as well as high school students. They also have Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts once a month within the space. They mainly have children that are Liberian, Sudanese, Montagnard, Latino/ Hispanic, and Burmese.

What kind of facilities would you ideally would you need or like to have?
A larger meeting space with smaller separate meeting rooms where tutors could help the students with homework in a more secluded and quieter setting. Also an outdoor basketball court as well as space outside for meeting. And also ideally an indoor recreation area.

How many participants do you usually have that participate in programs at one time?
There are usually about 40 students that come from 3-5 everyday also about 10 -20 adults and high school students that come for the ESL class.

What problems or issues are you currently experiencing with the space?
There are major volume issues. With all the children working in one room that is the size of an apartment living room it gets very loud, to the point that the children complain that they cannot concentrate and need to go home to work. They need more storage for toys that could be used outside [balls, jump ropes, etc] They also need more desk space [they only had 4 large tables] they also need more computers [they only had 4] they would like to have at least 10 for the children to work on their homework. Also they need A LOT of storage for books, crayons, and other craft supplies. Also they need bulletin board space. Drawings and other things that the children had done were taped on the wall and if there was a specific place for them to be “shown off” the children would really like it. Also more white boards or chalk boards to relay messages to the children that are working and to the tutors. They also needed more file storage. Overhead lighting, bright colors on the walls that do not show dirt.

What do you specifically enjoy about the space the most?
They loved that it was located within the apartment complex in which they lived. They loved the community that the location offered.

What type of activities do children participate in within the space?
They complete homework assignments, as well as craft projects, read, have meetings for Girl and Boy Scouts.

What types of technology, furniture, lights, colors do you have or want?
Overhead lighting, bright colors on the walls that do not show dirt. More computer and up to date computers.

What type of environment do you feel is most comfortable for you to work in?
The main volunteer had her own office that appeared very disorganized, but she said that she had her own space that she could bring one of the children to if they needed to discuss an issue and that she was very “blessed” with the space that she had.

What type of cleaning techniques do you use? [What materials are better for the types of messes that you have]
No carpet!

How much of the space is related to the immigrants and how do they respond to it?
She wished that there was more artwork that relate to the immigrant children that used the space. And that the space was more visually diverse.

Have the immigrants ever asked for changes within the space? And if so what changes did they ask for?
They asked for a playground [that was their main want] and there was a playground that was donated about a year ago.

How much interaction do the people have with the outside environment?
The children love to be outside and play on the playground. They wished that there was a place to meet outside or to even work on homework outside also. They would also love to incorporate an urban garden.

Interview with Maura Nsonwu

name: Maura Nsonwu
occupation: faculty at North Carolina Child Welfare Education Collaborative

interview:

1.what kind of group services do you do?
I work with refugees and immigrants in training and education (specifically for lead paint program)

2. What kind of facilities would you need or want, idealy?
Some smaller meeting spaces for 5/6 people and one or two spaces to accomidate 20-30 people. Up to 15 closed-door private office spaces. Several classrooms with move-able seating and individual table-tops for seminars, diversity classes, etc... Would like the tables and chairs to face each other in a u-shape or oval shape. A cubical space for faculty who do not house there as their main office but do have a smaller space to put their purse, jacket, do some work and communicate with other staff members. A break-room or kitchen for staff and also for immigrants to prepare dishes in a class setting. A welcoming space for a receptionist. A copy/printing space. A mailbox/mail room. Open space where immigrants can meet, greet, drink coffee and socialize (coffee, couches, art, etc...) Parking is crucial for visitors, staff and faculty!!! Appropriate signs for parking in different languages!! And lots and lots of windows!!! Makes such a difference!!

3. How many people typically participate in group projects at one time?
Sometimes meetings can be small- up to 5 or 6 people. Some can be the whole department with up to 20 people. On a rare occasion, we would need enough space to have up to 30 people in a room.

4. What nationalities do you deal with most often?
Most people fall under at least 1 of 3 categories: Latino-Hispanic, African, or Montagnard)

5. What kind of material things would you idealy need in a facility?
Projection and computer system in some of the meeting spaces and classrooms for powerpoints. A VCR/DVD and TV set would be ideal for showing videos. Comfortable chairs and moveable tables. Dry-erase boards are easy for writing things quickly that everyone can see.

6. Are there any issues for design that may result from all the different cultures?
Thats a good question... but I don't really know. Most of the work I have done is out-reach so I have not dealt with crossing cultures.

7. What is transportation like for most of the immigrants your program deals with?
Most do not have cars but the Latino-Hispanic population is definately more likely to have a car over any other nationality. It is good to do out-reach because the immigrants usually feel more comfortable in their own home but for their children who are going through the immigration process, it is good and important for them to see what higher-education here in America is like (if the facility was placed on campus).

Interview with Raleigh Bailey - Group 4

CNNC Project
Interview with Dr. Raleigh Bailey Micah Martin/Denise Smith
Monday, February 4, 2008 1:30 pm Group 4

Existing Facility/Current situation:
• Receptionist at front – receives phone calls, walk-ins (~6/hour), directs newcomers
• Staff/employees are “clustered” based on function/program
• Inadequate parking – must park in non-designated spaces
• 8’ x 8’ conference room for 15 employees/staff
• only 1 bathroom facility
• “homey” atmosphere
• too small for all the traffic
• kitchen is too small
• no meeting facilities for programs/seminars
• no child care space
• inadequate storage space
• artwork from different countries (have some – would like more)

Ideal situation/Desires for new facility:
• Keep “homey” atmosphere
• Larger conference room/meeting space
• A larger training space to accommodate as many as 80 people; smaller ones to accommodate around 20 people
• Separate offices for confidentiality of immigrants
• Separate space for administrative staff (i.e. reception, accounting, etc.) A ‘base’ for volunteers
• Larger commercial-type kitchen (ex. a typical church fellowship hall that has a large kitchen adjacent to a large meeting space)
• More cultural artwork on display
• Adequate restroom facilities (respect cultural differences)
• Child care (3.9 hour maximum)
• Multi-functional “observation” room that may be used for conversation observation and child care (one-way mirror)
• Adequate storage space for files, tapes/videos, office supplies, etc.
• Consideration for security/protection from pan-handlers, homeless population, etc.)

Raleigh touched on several attributes to CNNC and what the immigrants face when they’re there. CNNC is a Leadership development facility with a homey, family feeling. Since the immigrants see our culture as an intimidating society, he envisions a new facility as being a welcoming an encouraging facility. New immigrants still miss their culture and still need a reminder of who they are and where they came. In summary, he desires the new facility to be a place that is enticing to volunteers and new comers and an environment that fosters new and healthy relationships.

pictures of current CNNC building

Bathroom<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; A Leadership development program where most leaders were immigrants themselves. They partner with non-profit organizations to best serve the immigrants.

Staff:
How many full-time and part-time staff do you have?
15 full/part time people.

- their roles?
Some administrative staff and some volunteers.

- does each person have their own workspace?
Only 4 people have their own office (2 converted closets). Other people are grouped into offices by the organization they represent.

- Are there employees or volunteers who do not require a workspace?
The volunteers do not need an office, just a space for them to gather and keep their personal belonging while at CNNC.

How often are you at the facility?
95% of the time he is at UNCG in his office. Used to spend more time there but because of space issues he only goes there when needed (signing papers).

Operations:
Does your staff work in groups or independently?
They would prefer their own office but they are clustered in groups. This reinforces the ‘family’ aspect but it violates the confidentiality of the immigrants.

What makes your group work spaces/meeting spaces effective/not effective?
Their conference room is incredibly small. Can’t accommodate their staff. They don’t have a gathering place for large groups. They have to rent out space and that can cause issues. Availability and transportation can be a problem. They need a place of their own to accommodate the training services that they provide and the additional services they hope to provide in the future.

Are there offices or spaces that need to be next to one another or in a shared place or space?
The space in general should be closer to UNCG (more convenient).

Are there staff members that need their own offices?
The administrators need their own office as well as additional space for files. The rest of the staff would ideally each have an office, but right now they are content sharing with one another.

Facility:
Existing Facility:
It is an older house that is being used in every way to accommodate the needs of the staff and immigrants.

What do you think are the best things about the facility and what do you think it lacks?
The bet thing is the homey feeling the space gives, very welcoming. The space lacks storage, bathrooms, proper parking. Office space, training environment, kitchen, bad location.

What would you like to include in the new space that you don’t currently have?
Commercial kitchen, large training center, parking lot, better location, storage space, better bathrooms.

What kind of technology is needed for the space?
A computer for each staff member with wireless internet. A phone for each person. A gathering area with overhead projector and screen for gatherings.

What additional spaces would you like to have?
The large training room should divide into smaller rooms for different activities. Also there should be a space for child care/observation to watch and observe conversations between children and adults. This however would not be a daycare facility. They don’t want to deal with the licensing.

Community events?
They would like a space for at least 80 people for training as well as community events that they would like to have.

What kind of feel do you imagine the new place having?
Capture the hominess for newcomers and enticing to UNCG community. Wants to interface these two communities and build new relationships. Want to have cultural diversity and still honor the cultures that the immigrants come from.

Progress Report

Kim and Emily P are meeting at the Buddhist Temple Monday 3-4

Micah and Denise are meeting with Raleigh Bailey Monday at 1:30

Ashley and Emily L are meeting with The Lead Paint Project Monday at 3

Anna and Syd are hunting down Glenhaven

Lauren and Jess are meeting with Nolo Tuesday at 10:15

Kaytee has visited with Susan Hilcott already

That is our progress so far; there are still a few meetings up in the air with Americorp and Thriving at Three.

Questions for Group 2

Hey guys,
Don't forget we are meeting at 6pm on Monday and Tuesday to work on a power point for our presentation Wednesday.
