What is the organizations mission?
A Leadership development program where most leaders were immigrants themselves. They partner with non-profit organizations to best serve the immigrants.
Staff:
How many full-time and part-time staff do you have?
15 full/part time people.
- their roles?
Some administrative staff and some volunteers.
- does each person have their own workspace?
Only 4 people have their own office (2 converted closets). Other people are grouped into offices by the organization they represent.
- Are there employees or volunteers who do not require a workspace?
The volunteers do not need an office, just a space for them to gather and keep their personal belonging while at CNNC.
How often are you at the facility?
95% of the time he is at UNCG in his office. Used to spend more time there but because of space issues he only goes there when needed (signing papers).
Operations:
Does your staff work in groups or independently?
They would prefer their own office but they are clustered in groups. This reinforces the ‘family’ aspect but it violates the confidentiality of the immigrants.
What makes your group work spaces/meeting spaces effective/not effective?
Their conference room is incredibly small. Can’t accommodate their staff. They don’t have a gathering place for large groups. They have to rent out space and that can cause issues. Availability and transportation can be a problem. They need a place of their own to accommodate the training services that they provide and the additional services they hope to provide in the future.
Are there offices or spaces that need to be next to one another or in a shared place or space?
The space in general should be closer to UNCG (more convenient).
Are there staff members that need their own offices?
The administrators need their own office as well as additional space for files. The rest of the staff would ideally each have an office, but right now they are content sharing with one another.
Facility:
Existing Facility:
It is an older house that is being used in every way to accommodate the needs of the staff and immigrants.
What do you think are the best things about the facility and what do you think it lacks?
The bet thing is the homey feeling the space gives, very welcoming. The space lacks storage, bathrooms, proper parking. Office space, training environment, kitchen, bad location.
What would you like to include in the new space that you don’t currently have?
Commercial kitchen, large training center, parking lot, better location, storage space, better bathrooms.
What kind of technology is needed for the space?
A computer for each staff member with wireless internet. A phone for each person. A gathering area with overhead projector and screen for gatherings.
What additional spaces would you like to have?
The large training room should divide into smaller rooms for different activities. Also there should be a space for child care/observation to watch and observe conversations between children and adults. This however would not be a daycare facility. They don’t want to deal with the licensing.
Community events?
They would like a space for at least 80 people for training as well as community events that they would like to have.
What kind of feel do you imagine the new place having?
Capture the hominess for newcomers and enticing to UNCG community. Wants to interface these two communities and build new relationships. Want to have cultural diversity and still honor the cultures that the immigrants come from.
